Overalls Progress and Button Indecision...

So the overalls are coming along.  They're actually going pretty quickly -- when I get the chance to sew.  Thing is, I don't get that much sewing time.  Mostly during naps.  I got the buttons in the mail the other day, and as you can see in the picture, they don't match after all.  Darn monitor.  Anyway, I'm kinda rethinking red now even though I had originally nixed it as an option.  I need nine buttons, so the smaller ones in the picture, which are the correct size, won't work.  I have exactly nine of the larger dark red buttons, but they are bigger than the pattern calls for.  Think I'll see if they'll work anyway.

I decided to underline the bodice with a lightweight cotton broadcloth I had in my stash, because the linen/rayon softened up quite a bit after laundering.

In progress overalls bodice.

  1. I like the non-matching buttons. I don't think they'd look bad at all. The dark red ones are nice too tho. Love blue and red!

  2. I wish I was better at sewing, I can't wait to see the overalls when they're finished!!

  3. I think the cherry red buttons would look very nice--I really like the contrast, actually :-)

  4. I love how the dark red ones look with the blue.

  5. Yeah, the cherry red are my favourite too. I just don't have enough of them! Perhaps I'll make another stab at ordering buttons over the internet. Should be easier finding ones to contrast rather than trying to match. I love red and blue together too. The only reason I had decided not to do it originally was because I figured I'd have to wear a red or white top, but that's probably what I'd wear anyway!

  6. Hi! I just found your blog through Gertie's Blog for Better Sewing and I think it looks really cool. Myself being a just starting seamstress; I love reading about other peoples adventures in vintage sewing land. ><

I am definately going to follow you. :D

  7. Well they are looking great - I cannot wait to see what they look like completed and on :) Goodluck!

  8. yea, I love the red ones! With red buttons, you could also wear a yellow/mustard top. I love yellow, red and blue!

  9. Thank you to everyone for your input! It really helps to hear other opinions.

@Gabriella: The more I look at the blue, I think you're right. They would work.

@b.: Thanks for visiting! I just love Gertie's blog! I wish I were half as good a blogger as she is!

@Brittany: Funny you should mention yellow... stay tuned for a follow-up button post! :D

  10. Cant' wait to see these completed! I'm sure they'll be as fabulous as everything else I've seen that you've made!!
